Why We Worship the Way We Do
We believe worship should engage more than our minds. It should speak to our hearts, stir our imaginations, awaken our senses, and help us see ourselves, one another, and God in new ways.
That is why creativity has such an important place at Asbury.
Our approach to worship grows from a belief that God is still creating, still speaking, and still meeting people in wonderfully different ways. Scripture and preaching are central to our worship, but so are music, art, movement, storytelling, laughter, prayer, and silence.
There isn’t only one way to encounter the sacred. So when we gather on Sunday, we make room for many.
Why Music
Music has a way of reaching places that words alone sometimes cannot.
At Asbury, music helps us celebrate, grieve, remember, question, hope, and pray together. Our musical life draws from a wide range of traditions and styles, from familiar hymns and sacred music to contemporary songs, Broadway, gospel, original arrangements, and music you may be surprised to hear on a Sunday morning.
The style may change, but the purpose remains the same: to help us connect more deeply with God and with one another.
Sometimes we sing together. Sometimes the choir or one of our musicians offers something for us to simply receive. And every once in a while, you may recognize a song and wonder, “Are they really singing this in church?”
Yes. We probably are.
Why the Arts
Long before most of us could explain what we believed, we understood stories, pictures, movement, and music.
The arts give us another language for exploring faith.
Drama can help us see an old story through new eyes. Dance can express something words cannot quite capture. A painting, photograph, set, costume, or visual image can invite us to notice something we might otherwise miss.
At Asbury, the arts aren’t simply performances added to a worship service. They are another way we tell stories, wrestle with questions, express what is in our hearts, and encounter the presence of God.
Why Creativity
The very first thing Scripture tells us about God is that God creates. We believe that creative spirit is reflected in each of us.
Creativity at Asbury isn’t limited to the people who sing, act, dance, paint, play an instrument, or consider themselves artists. Creativity is about being willing to imagine, explore, ask questions, and discover new ways of expressing an ancient faith.
That’s why no two Sundays at Asbury are exactly alike.
We honor the traditions that have shaped generations before us while remaining open to new ways of telling the story. Sometimes those two things come together in ways that are beautiful, moving, funny, surprising, or wonderfully strange.
We think there’s room for all of that in church.
Why Silence
With all the music, creativity, and energy you’ll experience at Asbury, some of our most important moments are also the quietest.
Our lives are full of noise. Phones buzz, schedules fill up, responsibilities compete for our attention, and there is always something else demanding a response.
Worship gives us permission to stop.
Through prayer, reflection, and silence, we create space to listen—to God, to our own hearts, and sometimes to the things we’ve been too busy to notice.
Silence isn’t an empty part of worship. Sometimes it’s where the deepest things happen.

Find Your Voice
Music has been at the heart of worship at Asbury for generations, thanks to a community of singers and musicians who generously share their gifts.
Our choir and musicians help lead worship through a wonderfully broad musical tradition. Depending on the Sunday or season, you may hear traditional sacred music, gospel, contemporary arrangements, spirituals, Broadway selections, popular music, or something created especially for Asbury.
What brings all of it together isn’t a particular musical style. It’s the story we’re trying to tell.
And music at Asbury isn’t only something to listen to. If singing or playing music brings you joy, there may be a place for you to share that gift here.
You don’t have to arrive knowing everyone. You don’t have to be a professional musician. You simply need a love for music and a willingness to become part of the community making it.
Worship Wherever You Are
Join Us Online
Sometimes you can’t be in the sanctuary on Sunday morning. You can still be part of worship.
Our 11:00 AM Sunday service is available online, allowing members, friends, travelers, former Savannahians, and people discovering Asbury for the first time to worship with us from wherever they happen to be.
For some, online worship is a way to stay connected when they can’t attend in person. For others, it’s the first doorway into the Asbury community.
