Phil Rovner, an engineer and musician, developed the first Rovner ligature in 1974 after struggling with intonation. He sought a new approach to secure the reed, drawing inspiration from his work in aerospace and acoustics. His original Dark ligature, which was patented in 1974, became his company’s first and best-selling product by using a fabric material to avoid pressure points on the reed, allowing it to vibrate more freely.
Over the years, Rovner Products has continued to innovate, developing many other models, such as the MKIII, Star, Versa, and Platinum, to cater to different playing styles and needs.
