They’ve gone from diabetes drugs to some of the most talked-about medications in the world almost overnight.

At least that’s what it looks like from the outside.

In reality, the science behind these medications has been building for decades. The story involves hormone researchers, diabetes research, metabolic science, and somehow, the venom of a giant desert lizard.

And weirdly enough, that lizard ended up helping change obesity treatment forever.

The Discovery Started With a Simple Question

Back in the 1960s, researchers noticed something that didn’t make much sense at first.

When people drank sugar, their bodies released a huge insulin response. But when researchers gave people the exact same amount of sugar through an IV, the insulin response was much weaker.

That raised an obvious question:

How did the body know food was coming before blood sugar even fully rose?

Researchers eventually realized the digestive system was sending chemical signals to the pancreas almost immediately after food entered the gut. That process became known as the “incretin effect.”

By the 1980s, scientists had identified one of the major hormones involved: GLP-1, short for glucagon-like peptide-1.

The hormone looked incredibly promising for diabetes treatment, but there was a problem. Natural GLP-1 didn’t survive long in the body. Enzymes destroyed it within minutes.

So researchers had the right target, but not a usable medication yet.

Then the Gila Monster Entered the Picture

This is the part of the story that sounds made up.

In the 1990s, endocrinologist Dr. John Eng started looking for naturally occurring compounds that behaved similarly to human GLP-1 but lasted longer in the body.

That search eventually led him to the Gila monster, a venomous lizard found in the American Southwest.

Gila monsters have a bizarre feeding pattern. They can go long periods without eating, then suddenly consume massive meals without completely wrecking their blood sugar.

Researchers discovered a compound in the lizard’s venom called exendin-4. The important part wasn’t just that it mimicked GLP-1 — it stayed active far longer than natural human GLP-1 did.

That eventually led to Byetta® (exenatide), approved in 2005 as the first FDA-approved GLP-1 medication for type 2 diabetes.

At the time, most people still viewed these medications strictly as diabetes treatments.

That was about to change.

The Moment Doctors Realized Something Bigger Was Happening

As newer GLP-1 medications were developed, researchers found ways to make them last longer and require fewer injections.

That eventually led to medications like Ozempic® (semaglutide), approved in 2017.

Then doctors started noticing something they couldn’t ignore anymore.

Patients weren’t just improving blood sugar levels. They were losing significant amounts of weight. People reported feeling full faster, eating less naturally, and experiencing far less “food noise” throughout the day.

For a lot of patients, it was the first time in their lives that appetite felt manageable instead of constant.

That changed the conversation around obesity treatment almost immediately.

GLP-1 Medications Became Bigger Than Diabetes Treatment

Once pharmaceutical companies realized how effective these medications could be for chronic weight management, development accelerated fast.

A couple major moments:

• Wegovy® was approved in 2021 specifically for chronic weight management.

• Zepbound® (tirzepatide) followed in 2023, targeting both GLP-1 and another hormone called GIP.

Researchers are now studying these medications for much more than diabetes and weight loss, including cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, inflammation, and even addiction-related behaviors.

The more scientists study metabolic health, the more they realize appetite and body weight are deeply connected to hormones and brain signaling — not simply discipline or willpower.

Why the Story Matters

Part of what makes GLP-1 medications so fascinating is that they completely changed how many people think about obesity.

For decades, weight loss was treated almost entirely like a self-control problem.

But these medications came out of years of hormone research showing that hunger, fullness, insulin response, and cravings are heavily biological processes.

And somehow, part of that breakthrough traces back to a venomous lizard sitting in the desert.

It’s one of the stranger origin stories in modern medicine, but it helped lead to one of the biggest breakthroughs in obesity and metabolic treatment in decades.

A few years ago, most people had
