The combination of Chromium and Phentermine HCl in an oral capsule formulation is primarily used for weight management. Chromium is a mineral that enhances the action of insulin, a hormone critical to the metabolism and storage of carbohydrate, fat, and protein in the body. Phentermine HCl, on the other hand, is a sympathomimetic amine anorectic agent and it has been found useful in the management of exogenous obesity as a short-term adjunct in a regimen of weight reduction.
However, like all medications, this formulation can interact with other drugs, potentially altering their effects or increasing the risk of adverse reactions. It is important for patients and prescribers to be aware of these potential interactions.
Phentermine HCl can interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Using these two drugs together can lead to a hypertensive crisis (a severe increase in blood pressure that can lead to a stroke). Therefore, Phentermine HCl should not be used within 14 days of taking an MAOI.
Phentermine HCl may also interact with certain antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can increase the risk of a condition called serotonin syndrome, which can be serious and potentially life-threatening. Symptoms of serotonin syndrome can include agitation, restlessness, confusion, rapid heart rate, dilated pupils, loss of muscle coordination, heavy sweating, diarrhea, headache, shivering, and goosebumps.
Chromium may interact with insulin and other medications used for diabetes. It can enhance the effects of these medications, potentially leading to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include dizziness, lightheadedness, shakiness, hunger, and irritability. If you are taking insulin or other diabetes medications, your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose if you are also taking Chromium.
Chromium may also interact with antacids, corticosteroids, H2 blockers (like cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine, and ranitidine), proton pump inhibitors (like omeprazole, lansoprazole, and pantoprazole), and beta-blockers. These medications can affect the absorption or excretion of chromium, potentially altering its effects.
It’s important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking to avoid any potential drug interactions. If you have any questions or concerns about these potential interactions or about the Chromium/Phentermine HCl formulation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at Formulation Compounding Center. We are here to help.
