Keep Your Child Healthy on Your Summer Vacation

The Sunshine State draws visitors from all over the world, but Florida temperatures and conditions can be overwhelming. It is important to take extra precautions to avoid heat stroke, sunburns, and dehydration. If you’re going to be outdoors for long periods of time, it is vital to plan for indoor breaks throughout the day to help everyone cool off and not fall victim to heat exhaustion.

During these breaks, and throughout the day, make sure the whole family drinks plenty of water to avoid dehydration. You may also want to consider drinks that replenish electrolytes, as they are lost when you sweat. This could be important for very active children playing outdoors in the heat.

As well as staying hydrated, try to avoid too much junk food. There are plenty of temptations while on vacation and it’s fine to indulge occasionally, but try to balance those treats with healthy meals. One of the benefits of staying in Kissimmee vacation villas such as Fantasy World is that you can prepare healthy meals of your own, rather than relying solely on restaurants.

The type of clothing your children wear can also affect their health when out in the hot Florida sunshine. It is best to wear light cotton fabrics that allow the skin to breathe or wear specially designs sports clothing that helps to whisk sweat away from the body. It is best to wear light-colored clothing that reflect sunlight, because dark colors absorb heat. T-shirts and tank tops may seem an easy way to keep cool, but don’t forget about the risk of sunburn. Lightweight long-sleeve shirts and wide-brimmed hats should be kept on hand to avoid painful, dangerous sunburns.

Of course, don’t forget the sunscreen. Even on overcast days, it’s possible to get a sunburn. Choose high SPF sunscreens and reapply often, especially if your children are sweating or swimming.

Children often play together and come into contact with lots of surfaces that could harbor germs, especially in parks and other public places. Encourage them to wash their hands more frequently, and consider bringing along hand sanitizer for those times when soap and water aren’t always available.

These are all things that parents try to encourage in their children on a regular basis, but it pays to be extra vigilant while on vacation. The reward is a summer vacation full of great memories.
