A goal tells you what you want to accomplish. A strategy explains how you intend to make it happen.<\/p>

Without a strategy, a goal is little more than a wish. You have no direction, no way to measure your progress, and no basis for deciding whether you should continue, adjust, or try something different.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Strategy does not have to be complicated. It is not necessarily a five-year business plan, a mission statement, or a long document sitting in a binder that nobody reads.<\/p>

Strategy is deciding where you want to go and intentionally creating the conditions that make it more likely you will get there.<\/p>

Notice I said \u201cmore likely.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

If you have read my introduction, you already know I have a bit of a Batman problem. It probably will not surprise you to learn that I also collect autographs.<\/p>

When I was younger, I wanted to build my collection, but autographs were expensive. I was beginning my career and starting a family, so spending large amounts of money on collectibles was not exactly responsible.\u00a0<\/p>

My goal was simple: acquire the autographs I wanted while spending as little money as possible.<\/p>

That may sound like wishful thinking. It was, until I developed a strategy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I did not have a lot of money, but I had web-development skills at a time when the internet was still new. I understood the autograph industry, had relationships with dealers, and knew the problems both dealers and collectors were experiencing.<\/p>

Dealers could reach customers through eBay, but the fees kept growing and the platform stood between them and their customers. Building lasting relationships was difficult.\u00a0Collectors had their own frustrations finding reputable dealers and desirable inventory.<\/span><\/p>

I saw an opportunity to solve both problems.\u00a0<\/span>I created a website where autograph dealers could sell their inventory for free. I was not trying to build the next eBay. I was creating access:<\/p>

Within a year, it had more than 50,000 registered users and approximately 50 autograph\u00a0<\/span>dealers. Dealers began offering me better prices and early access to inventory. The website d<\/span>eveloped into a full-time business that helped replace my wife\u2019s income after our first child was\u00a0<\/span>born. Eventually, I sold the business.<\/span><\/p>

People saw the outcome and called me lucky. What they did not see was the strategy behind it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The website did not succeed because I was smarter than everyone else. It succeeded because I asked a different question.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

I wanted better access to autographs. Instead of focusing only on what I wanted, I created something valuable for dealers and collectors. Once I solved their problem, my original goal became a natural outcome.<\/p>\n

That is one of the most important lessons within the Strategy pillar. <\/p>

A strong strategy should not simply extract value from other people. It should create value for them.<\/p>\n

When your strategy helps others, you do more than move toward a goal. You build relationships, expand your resources, and develop a reputation as someone who solves problems.<\/p>\n

Those benefits frequently become more valuable than the original goal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

When a Strategy <\/span> Stops Working<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Of course, not every strategy succeeds.<\/p>

Years later, I created another plan to help me buy something I had wanted since childhood: a Batmobile. I gathered several talented friends and started a business buying, restoring, and reselling cars.<\/p>

Initially, the plan worked. We made money, my friends earned extra income, and I began building a Batmobile fund.<\/p>

Then the assumptions behind my strategy started falling apart.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The repairs became more complicated. Tools and overhead became more expensive. My friends viewed the project as a job, while I had viewed it as friends enjoying a hobby together.<\/p>

My career also advanced, making the time I spent flipping cars increasingly costly.<\/p>

The hobby became work. The fun became an obligation. I was working harder, making less progress, and continuing to follow a strategy that no longer made sense.\u00a0<\/p>

My strategy did not fail because having a plan was a mistake. It failed because my original assumptions were wrong, and I did not adjust quickly enough when the evidence changed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

      You are already following some type of strategy. You may have designed it intentionally,
      inherited it from someone else, or simply drifted into it. The important question is whether you are following it on purpose.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

      I have been lucky. Luck has opened doors I never could have predicted.<\/p>

      But luck is a terrible strategy.<\/p>

      That is why the first pillar of Batitude is not talent, intelligence, or luck. It is strategy.<\/p>\n
